MATA KAIL PROJECT - TRAINING MODULE DEVELOPMENT
TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION FOR (M)SMEs
OVERVIEW
Kopernik's Solutions Lab Team invites vendors to develop a training module titled "Technical Aspects of Sustainable Production" aimed at the Fisheries Sector. The training will be provided to small-medium enterprise (SME) and micro, small-medium enterprise (MSME) owners in the fisheries sector and will be adapted for youth who are being encouraged to seek employment in the fisheries sector. The training will take place in three districts in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Lembata, Sikka, and Nagekeo. The engagement of the training consultant will be for three months.
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
This project is being delivered by implementing partners Yayasan Plan International Indonesia, Kopernik and Bengkel APPeK on behalf of Plan Germany, funded by the European Union. The full project is being delivered across the three districts mentioned above, Nagekeo, Sikka, and Lembata in Eastern Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.
The overall objective of this project is to promote sustainable economic growth and employment opportunities for marginalized youth, particularly young women, in the fish-processing sector in Indonesia. The specific objectives are:
Empowering Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to provide environmentally friendly and sustainable processes, products and services in the fisheries sector which will promote employment opportunities to marginalized youth, particularly young women;
Increasing the knowledge, skills and attitudes of parents and caregivers, particularly young women, in promoting sustainable consumption patterns and behaviours towards fish products in order to achieve healthy and well-nourished children, particularly girls.
To achieve these objectives, ten training modules will be produced, each led by the different partners, Yayasan Plan International Indonesia, Bengkel APPek and Kopernik. The module highlighted in this tender will be one of the ten developed. Different aspects of these ten modules will be used to deliver training sessions to (M)SMEs and adapted for youth, and will eventually be combined to provide overarching training materials for workers in the fisheries sector that can be used by the government and by other organisations in the future.
SCOPE OF WORK
The primary goal of this module titled "Technical Aspects of Sustainable Production" is to build the capacity of targeted (M)SMEs related to adopting simple technologies that can increase their overall production and in turn improve their income.
3.1 Outputs

A preview of Indonesia's fisheries sector at the national and local level;
Information on fish seasonality and weather across the three districts;
An introduction to sustainable production concepts (e.g. definition,indicators, principles, etc.);
A summary of current fish processing methods used by (M)SMEs globally and in Indonesia;
Information regarding value-adding to fish-based products through new processing technologies globally and in Indonesia;
Information that shares Kopernik's findings on the specific experiments that Kopernik has conducted - introducing environmentally-friendly and sustainable technology in the three districts;
The connection between sustainable production and business sustainability;
Information on production standards/labels/certifications;
Information on how to develop a sustainable production plan;
General business and financial administration skills related to technology adoption and business viability; and
Other relevant information that is discovered during the course of the module development.
This training module should cover the main categories highlighted in the MATA KAIL project - fish storage, fish preservation and fish processing and should be aligned with the information gained from our published Market Demand Research.
The consultant will be expected to deliver the training in Indonesian language, guided by the manual and worksheets during the first round of training to selected (M)SMEs in November 2019 in the three locations. Community-based trainers will be engaged to participate in these sessions as part of the 'Train the Trainer' program where they will learn how to deliver the training for the second and third training sessions with the assistance of Kopernik personnel.
